Basically, the airports have to get approved and so on backed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and other accrediting bodies. The international airport codes are named after the first three letters of the city or place - MEX for Mexico city, IST for Istanbul, HKG for Hong Kong or a combination of the letters in the name - DAI for Darjeeling, AUH for Abu Dhabi, EWR for Newark.
Some United States airports they simply retained with National Weather Service (NWS) codes and appended an X at the end, LAX for Los Angeles, PHX for Phoenix.
DXB Full Form
So as it follows with Dubai, DXB. Although it is spelled as D-U-B-A-I, IATA has not given the abbreviation as DUB because it has already been given to the city of Dublin as DUB. The Dublin airport is the oldest and was first to dib for DUB, so the (then) marketing team decided to nail the word DXB for Dubai (DXB) airport. Please note that X is just a variable used instead of U so it is D-X-B now.
